Vancouver Highlights (Part 3) @ Bard On The Beach Shakespeare Festival

My family and I are generally theatre fans, particularly my mum and sis. They have been to quite a number in London, UK and I myself have experienced the longest running play in London when I was there 5 years ago! Summer in Vancouver gave us the opportunity to attend Bard On The Beach, which is Western Canada's largest professional Shakespeare festival (runs from June-Sept). In fact, I have been to the Shakespeare on Saskatchewan in Saskatoon in previous summer and loved it so much! So, we were there for Twelfth Night. I can't exactly remember how much was the tickets but I think its about $35 for matinees. Anyways, its located at Vanier Park and honestly, its not that easy to find the place. Even the cab driver had difficulty finding us after the play was finished. We took a cab directly from Waterfront Station; since there's no direct access for public transit.
Mum knows practically all the Shakespeare plays! (Well..I do know them roughly too ;p
The MUST-POSE-WITH-TICKETS look. After 5 years still posing the same @__@
No cameras allowed once the play starts so, no photos:) Place was almost full regardless of seatings. People in Vancouver do know how to enjoy ;P. The play was close to 3 hours including intermission. Lots of portable toilets (brilliant idea, so that you don't have to wait like crazy in a long line) in case you need to go. Play was awesome (with superb leads) and lots of naked butts scenes. Lols. After the play, we walked around the grounds by the river since it was a nice sunny afternoon. More snapshots of Vancouver! (I'm loving it!) We left the place by calling a cab as well which was a little bit of a hassle because the driver couldn't find the place. So we ended up having to wait for quite a while ( but it was fine, since it was a beautiful day:).

I will definitely be back if given the chance. This year's play will be Midsummers Night Dream and Tempest. There's always a tragedy and comedy play for you to choose from. Check out their website for more info.

Vancouver highlights (August 2013) Part 2

Dr Sun Yat Sen Garden
It has always been my mum's dream to come visit Vancouver; so I decided to put Vancouver as the main itinerary during her 2-week trip. We spent one week in downtown Vancouver; in a relax pace enjoying the food, sceneries, people, shopping and everything else! If you followed my previous post (Vancouver highlights-Part 1), I chose to stay near Chinatown in an apartment I rented via AirBnB. We were right next to Dr Sun Yat Sen Garden. I would recommend visitors to visit Vancouver Lookout as the first place of interest. Summer in Vancouver is lovely (not too hot or cold or windy), so enjoy the beautiful weather! Just a summary of the walking distance from where we stayed (Taylor St. near Chinatown/Gastown):
1. Vancouver Lookout - 800m
2. Big Bus Hop-On-Hop-Off centre point (Water St.) - 750m
3. Waterfront Station - 900m
4. Canada Place - 1.2km
It's really not too far and Waterfront Station was the main train station that we use for most of the places we visited; including getting a cab! Of course, there are more high-end hotel options near Canada Place (mostly for cruise-shippers) such as Fairmont but why pay so much? And the place there is always crowded with people!
Vancouver Lookout - See something familiar in the poster ?? KLCC Petronas Twin Towers (*proud Malaysian)
Waterfront Station : One of the lines goes directly to Vancouver International Airport, Downtown Vancouver and Richmond. Reach the airport within 25 minutes!
If you are a first-timer to Vancouver, the best way I would suggest to explore downtown is by using the Big Bus Hop-On-Hop-Off tour. The hop-on-off sightseeing route covers 20 stops; mostly at the main attractions in Vancouver. One-day and two-passes are offered; depending on your schedule, you can arrange according to your pace and flexibility. I would suggest you to take the 2-day pass; one day to cover the whole loop while another day to cover Stanley Park. *Tips : Do frequently check Groupon especially during the summer for deals from Big Bus. I got two passes for half the price and just top-up $10 for additional one day at the Big Bus welcome centre on Water St.
Big Bus with partial open roof top ! Amazing weather ! Might get a little bit too hot later in the afternoon though.lols

So, basically my itinerary with the Big Bus 2-day pass was :
Day 1
Gastown (where we started)
Canada Place
English Bay Beach
Stanley Park (Vancouver Aquarium) $29/adult ; Seniors $20
Robson shopping district (where we ended)

Day 2
Stanley Park excursion ( a different loop compared to the main city loop)
Standley Park's Prospect Point-View of Lions Gate bridge
Granville Island
Here comes the Pink Bus !
Vancouver Aquarium : Lots of sea creatures and jelly fish. Just ok. Have been to better underwater aquariums
View from Big Bus during Stanley Park Excursion loop
A must-not-missed view at Prospect Point. Right : Claimed to be Best Ice Cream in town!
Left: Gastown famous steam clock. Right : Granville Island (sunburnt face @__@)
Check out some of  my previous blog post of food we had :
8. Beard Papa's - Had this for supper one night.
Fresh and natural cream puffs with different flavors such as vanilla beans, Belgian dark chocolate and green tea. Puffs are baked, not fried and no preservatives used. I quite like the fresh taste of the whipped cream. Not a must-have item but if you happen to be on Robson St and care for a snack, do check them out.

The Official Richmond Night Market @ Richmond, BC

During my mum's two-week visit, Richmond,BC was the last that we had in our itinerary. We spent 2 nights here; first because I knew this is sort of like a Chinese town-which means there should be more Asian food and groceries, and second, being close to the airport, most hotels here provide free shuttle to YVR; which meant we also saved a little on cab fee. We stayed in Ramada Inn basically because of the price, reviews, location and of course the free shuttle. We were given a room with a king-sized bed. The hotel is probably 3-star but for the price we paid, it was well spent! Room was quite spacious though it is slight dated, bathroom was super clean and it is located right next to Minoru Park. A simple breakfast was also provided for free.
Minoru Park : Lovely park in Richmond with lots of rabbits around :)

One of the highlights of Richmond is their Summer Night Market; something not very common here in Canada considering the weather and all. Note that there are two different night market; The Official Richmond Night Market and The International Summer Night Market. I came a little bit unprepared so was confused at first. We decided to go for the Richmond Night Market rather than The International Night Market as the former is more accessible, and we wanted to see how an Asian night market looks like over here. Best mode of transportation is by Canada Line: Stop Bridgeport Station. Admission is $2.00 and its free for senior citizens or children below 10.  The International Night Market has free admission.
Big yellow duck greeted us :)
I did not feel like I'm in Canada @__@
Throngs of people. It's like a HUGE pasar malam (Malaysian version of night market minus wet market)
A good place for you to get a feel of what an Asian night market looks like. Fancy clothes, gadgets, mobile accessories, jewelries, etc. Lots of Asian food mostly ranging from $3-5. I spotted 'Chao Tao Fu' (Stinky tofu) which I almost immediately ordered without second thought! It's basically a form of fermented tofu with a strong odor which can be smelled from a distance. This one however was not too bad (to fit the food culture here maybe). Those I had in Malaysian night market's in Sri Petaling and Cheras or even China's Shenzhen had way stronger odour. And yet, ppl (like me and Panda), loved it to the max!~
Stinky tofu $6.50. Not cheap (compared to Malaysia's) but probably the best you can get here ?
Mum's favorite $3.00 : Rice noodle with sesame, sauces and and chilli. Good stuff
Deep-fried chicken. Super yummy but I can't remember how much it was.
Handcrafted ice cream. The making process was cool but the ice cream was bland (meaning less sugar which is supposed to be healthier ?)
Remember Running Man (Korean variety show)? lols
Since Richmond is more like an Asian town here, I was excited to see these bakeries ( like 'jakun' but considering you can hardly get bakeries in Saskatoon or anywhere else in Canada for that matter, I didn't care). Both bakeries were located at Richmond centre with Maxim's within the building itself. Funny how these bakeries seem to only be an Asian thing. We find lots of these in Malaysia, Singapore, Korea etc. Kam Do Bakery was really impressive. Lots of varieties and all freshly baked. Had a hard time choosing ;P. Mum was fascinated with the mango pudding so she bought one and it tasted superb. Loved it! Buns were equally good; wish I had bought more!

Maxim's is another bakery in close vicinity; in fact located in Richmond Centre. Smaller than Kam Do and most buns were gone by the time we got there (maybe it close to closing time). It was mooncake season so bought a couple to try. The mooncake were just ok, tasted not as good as those I usually had. Macaroons were fresh with lots of coconut but I thought it was a bit dry compared to those I've tasted from Superstore or Safeway. Savoury buns is one of my favourite things so they always tasted good to me ( can hardly go wrong I supposed).

Richmond is a nice place and I don't mind visiting here again; probably with my family members somewhere this year. We didn't really get to try much Chinese restaurants here so I hope to do that again this year :)

Explore Victoria, BC (4D3Ns)

A trip to British Columbia (BC) will not be complete without visiting Victoria, the capital city of BC. Located at the southern tip of Vancouver Island, one would have to take a flight or ferry to reach this island. My mum and I spent 3 nights here after our overnight trip in Whistler (check out my Whistler blog post). We boarded the Pacific Coach Lines bus from Whistler to Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and from there, we purchased a separate bus ticket (YVR airport/Victoria) ($46) that brought us to Tsawwassen (a ferry terminal south of Vancouver). The ticket covers only the transportation to the ferry terminal. You will then be required to purchased ferry tickets ($16.25) to get onboard the ferry. The bus travels on the ferry as well. Prior to arriving in Swartz Bay terminal in Victoria (journey on water takes approximately 2 hours), you will have to board the Pacific Coach bus in the ferry. The bus will then bring you to downtown Victoria; however there is no service to downtown on their 7.40pm departure. Journey to the ferry terminal from downtown Vancouver is a little bit cumbersome if you travel by yourself; so unless you are really tight on budget and have lots of time, I would recommend you to take Pacific Coach Lines buses. It saves all the hassles as you can plan ahead with schedules in their website and purchase your tickets in advance.
For those who gets sea sick, fret not as the ferry service is not like those little ferries on a rough sea as you imagine. We are talking about a huge ferry that can fit up to 2100 passengers and 470 cars, almost like a cruise ship! Some prefer to hang out at the open deck; enjoying the sea breeze and beautiful sceneries ( my friend spotted whales during their ferry ride!). There is a nice cafe with decent prices on board the ferry. We personally had lunch there on our return trip and it was good (and initially, I was wondering why people were rushing towards the cafe area once boarding the ferry lols)
We arrived at our hotel, Chateau Victoria Hotel and Suites, late night as we had to board the last ferry due to some technical error Pacific Coach had with our bookings at Whistler earlier (lesson learnt; make sure you call and confirm with them your bus tickets prior to your trip!). Tired from the long journey from Whistler, we were happy to be greeted with a warm welcome (probably because we were their last customer who showed up at midnight!). This hotel is definitely not cheap but I bought a very good deal online for their traditional room. Their traditional (standard rooms) are newly renovated and have either 2 queen beds or 1 king bed. Nothing else beats its location; right at the heart of downtown with easy walk to attractions such as the Parliament Buildings, Inner harbour, Fairmont Empress, Big Bus tour main centre, souvenir shops and Pacific Coach Lines station. The bus stop to Buchart Garden is also  situated directly opposite the hotel building.
Visitor Centre at Inner Harbour
Big Bus Hop-On-Hop-Off Welcome centre (kiosk) on Government St.

I would definitely recommend Big Bus Hop-On-Hop-Off tour especially if you are travelling in big groups, if you have limited time or if you want the flexibility without having to walk as a tour group and slowly enjoying the attractions. It saves the trouble of having to rent a car, find your way etc. Tickets are offered as 1-day ($29) or 2-days ($37) passes. *Tips: Groupon has good deals for these tour bus tickets occasionally for both Vancouver and Victoria :)). For Victoria, 1-day pass is quite sufficient to cover the whole town including Oak Bay Marina. The tour however do not cover Saanich area where Buchart Gardens and Butterfly Farm are located.
Canada's oldest Chinatown and world's second oldest after San Francisco's

Fan Tan Alley : The narrowest street in whole of Canada!
Lunch at Fantan Cafe, Chinatown
Right beside Fan Tan Alley, is Fantan Cafe which has been there for 21 years! A quaint little shop with an attractive front and well-displayed menus. Surprisingly, there's quite a number of people eating inside eventhough its already way passed lunch time. We tried their special won-ton soup (wor-won ton), a version of won ton soup with chicken, shrimp, bbq pork and vegetables. The combination was good but I didn't quite like the wonton as I thought they tasted porky-ish. I would think they can improve on their marination. We also had the Thai peanut sauce noodles tossed together with sliced chicken and vegetables. I thought the combination was good (slightly sweetish but its Thai peanut sauce @__@). Usually Thai peanut sauce is used in Pad Thai (stir-fry noodles) and this would be a healthier version ? ;P

Overall, meal was just ok for us. My deepest regret was probably because we ordered the wrong things that did not suit our taste bud? They have a wide variety of dishes on their menu (including dim sum) and even a special make-your-own-lunch combo. Location is good and price is acceptable; pretty standard even though it is situated at a tourist area. You can easily get here at the Chinatown stop on Big Bus Hop-On-Hop-Off.

Oak Bay Marina and village
Buchart Gardens
Buchart Garden is one of the world's most famous floral show gardens located at Brentwood Bay, Victoria. It is about 30-45 minutes from downtown Victoria. You can drive here, take a shuttle bus or the cheapest alternative would be to use the public transit via Route 75. Honestly, the public transit is easy, cheap and convenient (especially if you are staying at Chateau Victoria). Of course, there will be a few stops here and there ( its a public transit afterall!), but you save lots ($5.00 for a DayPass) and its not as tiresome or worrisome as you think (return trip is slightly more cumbersome because you will have to wait with a whole bunch of visitors as well-especially if you happen to meet visitors coming from cruise ships).
The garden is open all year round but of course, summer would be the best ( rose garden and Japanese garden should best be visited during spring though). Summer admission rate is $30.80 and I think its totally worth the trip! Free brochures and maps of the place are available so that you know the garden  that you are in and the flowers that you are looking at. A perfect place to visit with your loved ones! You might want to check the weather forecast beforehand or bring a rain coat just in case it rains because it did when we were here. Be sure to browse through their huge souvenir shop and try out  The Dining Room's English afternoon tea! It was an awesome experience! Check out my blog post  on it (Buchart Gardens Afternoon Tea)~

To Whistler, BC on Rocky Mountaineer's Dome Service

One of my aim when deciding my travel itinerary in BC was to include all that BC has to offer; city, beach, island and mountain. So, since Canadian Rockies would be a little too far to travel, I decided on Whistler, a resort town located at the Coastal Mountains of British Columbia, 2 hours drive from Vancouver. Whistler features the two spectacular mountains, Whistler-Blackcomb and one of the largest ski resort in North America. For those who are not familiar, Whistler hosted the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. I was contemplating hard on whether I should spend the extra bucks on the Rocky Mountaineer Dome Service to Whistler or to just a get tour bus there. I wanted my mum to experience one of the greatest train rides in the world, and I was so happy I  made the right choice. The day started with us meeting up with some other passengers in Holiday Inn Downtown Vancouver, where then a shuttle bus brought us to the Rocky Mountaineer station in North Vancouver.
The day started with us meeting up with some other passengers in Holiday Inn Downtown Vancouver, where then a shuttle bus brought us to the Rocky Mountaineer station in North Vancouver.
Red carpet to welcome passengers riding on the Dome service. **Excited !! We went in August so the train was pretty full even for the Dome service. Staff was nice enough to snap a couple of photos for us when we arrived !
Train was elegantly decorated at the Dome service. Chairs were comfy and huge !
For those who have not much idea on this train, this is what you get for the Dome Service. Basically ( as of 2013), there are 2 different services; the Whistler service with large picture windows or Dome service ( in picture above).
Beverages were offered all throughout the journey. Service was definitely top-notch !
A fresh breakfast appetizer of yoghurt and berries.
Hot breakfast ( omelette, sausage, bacon, potatoes, grilled tomatoes and mushroom) for Dome service. Whistler service will offer a chilled-prepacked breakfast.
Awesome view and sceneries throughout the journey to Whistler.
Look at how spacious and how huge were the windows !
There is an observation deck one level below which is open for all passengers in both Dome and Whistler service. The deck is not big but I did not have any crowded issues. Basically, its a deck for those who would want to capture photos of the amazing view. I occasionally went down to the deck, especially right before when we were informed something amazing is approaching.
Train was parallel to the highway which leads to Whistler !
Right beside the observation deck is the dining room where I believe was to cater for passengers of other routes that the train is used for.
Complimentary postcards and candies from Rocky Mountaineer !
Arriving in Whistler, a shuttle bus brought us to our choice of hotels. I stopped at Delta Whistler, which is just beside the Pinnacles Whistler where we stayed. I got an absolutely superb deal from the Pinnacles website itself ( yup, even better than all the hotel booking websites). A suite with two queen-sized bed, a jacuzzi pool, kitchenette and a balcony. The hotel is not new but it definitely met all my requirements !
Whistler on a chilly, sunny afternoon ! Whistler also feature one of the best mountain bike park and the Crankworx Mountain Bike Festival was being held during the time when we were there.
We had our lunch at Thai In the Village. Wings for appetiser ( I didn't realise I didn't take a photo of that though !), green curry with rice and Thai mango dessert. Green curry was good apart from it having the bamboo shoots ( a normal ingredient in green curry which I hate it so much!). Dessert was n all-time favourite for me and my mum ! Food was just ok, not the best Thai meal but at least there's even Asian food at the Mountain !
Address :4293 Mountain Sq Whistler, BC

After lunch, we walked around the ski village which is specifically only for pedestrians; so no vehicles or fumes around ! Before coming, I was trying hard to convince my mum to take the Peak 2 Peak gondola ride with me. Upon reaching the base station, she totally changed her mind seeing the height of the mountain and lifts ! So since I came all the way, I totally had to try it even though I  was alone. Mum hang around the village while I took the gondola ride; which was an unforgettable experience! Ticket price was $ 48.95 and can be purchased on the spot. Discounted pricing for online purchase. So, from base station, you will take a ride from a small gondola to Whistler Mountain top. From there then you will take the Peak 2 Peak gondola which links the Whistler and Blackcomb mountain. Not for the faint-hearted, the view and sceneries were absolutely amazing ! You have a choice to ride in a glass-floor gondola however, there are less of these gondolas hence the queue would be longer. My advice is to go up with the normal gondola and come down with the glass-floor gondola or just skip it, you wouldn't miss much !

I met my Saskatoon friends who were on holiday here ! Also, don't forget to visit the Olympic Park at the newer end of the village.
Not to be missed; the Olympic Village !
I'm glad Pacific Coach screwed up our bus itinerary because then it gave us the chance to explore the CUTEST shop in Whistler COWS ! Until today, my mum (yeap…my mum @__@) constantly mention how awesome was the ice cream ( she had the one with a tinge of sea salt…making it a salty sweetish ice cream!). I had the one with oozing caramel and it was heavenly delicious. Not to be missed on a summers day in Whistler !
One of the best ice cream I've ever had !

It was nice waking up to a fresh mountain air and view. We had breakfast at the nearest restaurant BG Urban Grill with outdoor seating. It was nice to see the village so serene early in the morning before the tour busses arrived. I had the eggs benedict ($10.99) while mum had the 'two eggs any style' ($9.99).
Breakfast was not spectacular but as a whole it was alright. The hash brown and fruits serving can be improved as it looks miserable on that huge plate. Servers were attentive and friendly. Nothing beats enjoying your meal and coffee outdoor with fresh air and mountain view. This grill house also serves during lunch and dinner. Be prepared for a jam-packed restaurant throughout the day!

For those who plan to visit, most tourist would make Whistler a day-trip but I would suggest to stay at least one night here. Plenty of choices for accommodation, shopping and food. Get a train ride there and come back by bus. As of this year ( 2014), I realised that Rocky Mountaineer had stopped the Dome service to Whistler; hence only the Whistler service is offered. I might just probably be one of the last passengers for the Dome service since the train only runs during the few months in summer ! We took a bus ride to Vancouver airport, where from there, we took another bus ride to the ferry terminal which brought us to Victoria island.
